This will then enable them to start conversations about children's communication skills. 1 in 5 children have communication needs but this is often unrecognised in young children and can lead to other difficulties as they grow older. The department holds accreditation with the National Autism Society, recognising the department's commitment to providing an inclusive and supportive environment for children and young people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other additional needs. Sensory rooms offer a calm, controlled environment where children can regulate their emotions and reduce anxiety, making it easier for them to engage with clinicians and receive the care they need. These places are proven to improve outcomes for children with ASD, reduce the need for restraint and sedation, and support families at what is often an extremely stressful time. The scheme aimed to target children with conditions such as cerebral palsy whose families often lack confidence in attending holiday clubs. The physio team wanted to make the sessions fun and provide drinks, snacks and small prizes. One group was to run for primary school children and one for secondary school age. Friends were very pleased to receive the application - the first from children's physiotherapy - and funded the cost of snacks, drinks, prizes, footballs and a football goal to a total of £200.Anna has now been in touch with a lovely letter thanking Friends for all the support for their team and the local community. The sessions had run - the first time for 8 years. Each group had 10 children so 20 in total were invited. Each child was offered 2 sessions a week for 3 weeks as part of a group. They are a busy team of lone workers who respond to deteriorating children and their families on the children’s wards, emergency department and any area in the hospital where children receive care. They have to document urgently and in real time when reviewing these children and support nurses. It can be hard for them to find a free computer on which to record their documentation. Martha’s Rule is a mandated initiative to empower patients, their carers, families and advocates to have a route for escalation if they feel their loved one is acutely deteriorating and this team responds to all of these calls. The charity isdedicated to supporting stroke recovery through reading and story telling. They employ professional actors to deliver a variety of reading material that is selected to suit the needs of each stroke patient. The approach can help stimulate memory, engage language and lift spirits-ultimately alleviating symptoms of post stroke depression which can slow or even arrest recovery. More andmore research is pointing to the benefits of this work and they report that it does seem as if they are genuinely fulfilling a need. Ms Cavell travelled to Brussels where she set up a school of nursing which was well established when the war broke out in 1914. She and her nurses looked after soldiers wounded in the battlefields in Belgium. When they were well enough Ms Cavell enabled approximately 200 men to escape the occupied territories and assisted with their repatriation back to Britain. Babies admitted to the unit are often very premature, some asearly as 22 weeks gestation or are very sick term babies requiring intensive care forsurgical intervention, illness, cardiac issues, infection or trauma. The parents ofthese babies obviously want to be as near their baby or babies as possible. As theunit is a tertiary referral unit, babies are accepted for care from many parts of Londonand the south east so parents are often far from home and need somewhere to stay.Some parents also room in to care for their babies prior to discharge. The unit hasfour rooms for parents to stay but 37 cots for babies and the rooms are used a hugeamount. The furniture was worn and the beds which were not comfortable weremade up with clinical bedding. Regular live music events have been scheduled to take place in the Atrium in the main Whitechapel reception area of the hospital near the outpatient pharmacy and the café. The location has a piano donated by the family of Prof David Ritchie, former professor of surgery and the musicians perform in this area. A variety of music (both instrumental and vocal and of different genres) has been presented on various instruments by a diverse group of performers. The programme has included students from Queen Mary University, hospital staff and recently a patient. The events are usually scheduled twice weekly around midday and usually last for 1-2 hours. Performers are happy to interact with patients, staff and visitors in a relaxed atmosphere. Patients and visitors as well as staff are intrigued and respond positively with many stopping to listen and commenting on the therapeutic value of music. She has a new role to support families on the Children’s Intensive Care Unit as well as parents undergoing bereavement. The grants are for the benefit of patients and staff over Christmas. Staff were very pleased to see Committee members. We have already received feedback from Paediatric Intensive Care who plan to buy some hand cream for the parents of inpatient children. The visits are also an opportunity for staff to discuss possible grant applications with the team. We would encourage all staff to think about submitting applications. Theses are to help alleviate distress and trauma seen in young people added to adult wards. Many of these young people find admission stressful and upsetting and have insufficient distraction and opportunities to interact with their friends. The IPads are also useful for young people with learning difficulties who often become isolated and fearful while in hospital.
