January 2026 - Children's Emergency Department Grant
Luke Whittemore, Matron contacted Friends to ask for help with replacement of sensory equipment in the department. The department holds accreditation with the National Autism Society, recognising the department’s commitment to providing an inclusive and supportive environment for children and young people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other additional needs. Sensory rooms offer a calm, controlled environment where children can regulate their emotions and reduce anxiety, making it easier for them to engage with clinicians and receive the care they need. These places are proven to improve outcomes for children with ASD, reduce the need for restraint and sedation, and support families at what is often an extremely stressful time. Unfortunately one of the central pieces of equipment in the department’s sensory room had been damaged beyond repair.
Friends supported the repair of this equipment. Luke and the team are very grateful for this support and report the repair has made an immediate and meaningful difference to children with additional special needs. The new panel has turned the room back into a much more welcoming and engaging environment.
